About the Scholarship

The Scholarship

Purpose

The General Joseph W. Stilwell Scholarship Fund is designed to provide scholarships to students from the People’s Republic of China for studies toward a master’s degree at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

History

The General Joseph W. Stilwell Scholarship Fund was established in 1982 by Nancy Stilwell Easterbrook, Alison Stilwell Cameron, Grace Wang, and Alice Tao. The Scholarship continues the legacy of respect and friendship General Stilwell, the Commander of the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II, had with the Chinese people. During the early years there were a number of fund-raising activities each year to provide money for each scholar. In 1995, Nancy Stilwell Easterbrook endowed the Scholarship to ensure its future years. In addition to scholarship funds from this original endowment, Peter and Grace Wang committed funding in 2013 for a two-year Scholarship every other year named the Wang Foundation Stilwell Scholarship. There have been nearly 40 recipients of the Stilwell Scholarship since it was established at the Institute. Stilwell Scholars have embarked as leaders in business, education, and government, contributing to a deeper understanding between the United States and China–the core mission of the Scholarship.

How the Scholarship Operates

Early each calendar year, the files of all accepted prospective master’s degree scholars who have indicated a desire for financial assistance at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies are screened by the Stilwell Scholarship Committee. The Committee competitively selects 4-6 candidates based on academic credentials, life experiences, and accomplishments. Those candidates are then interviewed by Skype to finalize the selection process, and an award(s) is made.

How Scholars Are Selected

At the beginning of each new year, the Stilwell Scholarship Committee reviews the files of accepted prospective master’s degree candidate from China who have indicated a need for financial assistance at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. The Committee selects the top candidates, based on academic credentials, life experiences, and accomplishments. With input from former Stilwell scholars, the most promising candidates are interviewed by Skype and a final selection is made. To be eligible for consideration, candidates should complete the general scholarship application which is part of the admissions application.
